Media Ethics
Rwanda's media ethics framework is grounded in the RMC Code of Ethics, which emphasizes truth, accuracy, fairness, and independence. Journalists are expected to verify information, give right of reply, and protect vulnerable sources.
Code of Conduct
The journalists' code of conduct outlines professional standards including objectivity in reporting, separation of news and opinion, conflict of interest disclosure, and responsible use of anonymous sources.
Complaint Mechanisms
Citizens and organizations can file complaints with the RMC against media outlets for ethical violations. The commission reviews complaints within 30 days and can issue warnings, require corrections, or recommend sanctions.
Case Decisions
The RMC publishes quarterly reports of adjudicated cases, providing precedent and guidance for the sector. In 2024, 47 complaints were received with 32 resolved through mediation and 8 through formal decisions.
