Media Association

The Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ) is Rwanda’s leading professional organization dedicated to promoting ethical, independent, inclusive, and development-oriented journalism. With a membership of over 1,000 journalists, ARJ plays a central role in strengthening the media sector through capacity building, research, policy engagement, mentoring, and practical support to both journalists and media institutions.Over the years, ARJ has achieved significant milestones that have enhanced the professionalism and resilience of the media landscape in Rwanda. It has conducted nationwide mapping of journalists and media houses, strengthened advocacy for media freedom and access to information, and delivered targeted training programs on key thematic areas such as elections, agriculture, public accountability, and responsible reporting. The association has also expanded strategic partnerships with government institutions, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and international development partners to advance journalism standards and impact.In addition, ARJ has prioritized the welfare of journalists through initiatives such as a social solidarity scheme, while also promoting gender equality and disability inclusion within the media sector. It has strengthened internal governance systems and created platforms that recognize excellence and foster dialogue, including the Development Journalism Awards and the Club de la Presse.These efforts contribute directly to global and national development frameworks, including SDG 4 on quality education, SDG 5 on gender equality, SDG 8 on decent work, SDG 10 on reduced inequalities, SDG 16 on strong institutions, and SDG 17 on partnerships. They also align with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and NST2 by supporting informed citizenship, accountable governance, digital transformation, and a skilled, resilient media sector that drives inclusive and sustainable national development.
